Warden’s Welcome
The Rhodes Scholarships are a true collective community endeavour
The one word that best describes 2022/23 is celebration. We welcomed 1,300 Scholars and friends in June to commemorate 120 years of the Rhodes Scholarships. The completion of the building project was another major milestone, the product of many years of effort, and it is heart-warming to see our Scholars in Residence enjoying the beautiful spaces. Our partnership programmes go from strength to strength, and we look forward to welcoming the first ever cohort for the Oxford Next Horizons Programme in January. The Mandela Rhodes Foundation celebrated its 20th anniversary, the Schmidt Science Fellows Program reached the five-year point and both the Atlantic Institute and Rise held major convenings at Rhodes House over the summer.
At moments of great celebration, there also needs to be work put in to ensure the future remains just as bright. Five years ago, I communicated the 125th Strategic Plan at the start of my wardenship, and we are currently working on updating this and making sure it reflects the full richness of our community. Some important steps have already been completed which can be read about in this report, including expansion progress, updates to selection and the launch of the Exponential Potential campaign to support people, places and programmes.
Already so many in our community give generously to help support our work, and many more volunteer their time and energy. The Rhodes Scholarships are a true collective community endeavour, with a wonderful intergenerational connection. I am hugely proud of the achievements of our Scholars in Residence, and of Alumni across the globe. Thank you for giving back, paying it forward and helping ensure the next 120 years of the Rhodes Scholarships will be vibrant.
Best wishes,
Best wishes, Dr Elizabeth Kiss, Warden of Rhodes House and CEO of the Rhodes Trust
